A few days ago I made and posted this to our instagram account. I sort of live by this, I realize when I am not in such a good mood, the people around me (my kids and significant other) are subject to whatever comes. Β I also realized that this is completely unfair yet some of the time, it’s at the same time, hard to control. What I have learned so far from a few bad days, a couple unnecessary arguments, and a bunch of tears, is that I actually am the keeper of happiness in this household. If I am not happy, it’s somewhat of a chain reaction and toxic situation I am happy to be getting out of.

Staying at home (in my home at least) – I typically “work” a 12-16 hour day. Occasionally more on some days but rarely less. I may not HAVE to get out of my pajamas to go to “work” but that is a whole other set of circumstances…

A good day of “work” includes the daily house chores, meals, playtime together, one on one time with each kiddo, a little blog work, errands, naps, bedtime routine and then hopefully some mommy time or mommy/daddy time if he isn’t on graveyards.Β This can be a looong-ass day some days and other days seem to fly by.

So how do I ensure I am happy enough to make sure all this crap actually gets done every. single. day?

I now make it a point to set up my self for success every day. I’ve found that I need 3 things every morning to optimize my productivity while maintaining cheerfulness.

Every morning I ideally need:

  • My coffee – white coffee with white chocolate powder and toasted marshmallow syrup.
  • A breakfast I can look forward to – I’ve been terrible in the past about not eating breakfast and learning it does change my attitude and energy levels – in fact the opposite.
  • A comfortable outfit I can leave the house in if needed – being comfortable at home but not looking too schlumpy for the store will actually get me out of the house verses the ol’ faithful sweats and a t-shirt.
    **A really good mood setter for me is to listen to music while I cook or finish up breakfast. A little beyonce in the morning with Daniel Tiger in the background for the kiddos! πŸ˜‰

So every night as part of my daily chores:

  • I make sure that my coffee machine and tools are clean and ready to go in the morning.
  • I prepare or pull out any overnight casseroles, pull out any frozen breakfast meats to thaw in the fridge, and make sure the dishwasher is set to have everything clean in the morning so any pots or pans are ready to use.
  • I pick out an outfit based on the weather (use an app on your phone) and lay it out so I have no excuse to put it on after I get up and move around a little bit.

What kind of things do you ideally need for a productive day of work – whether it is at home or not?

This is something that I plan on doing for a while (staying at home with my smaller children) and finding out the hard way isn’t always so wonderful.

  1. I’ve found recently that leaving the house clean the night before makes an amazing difference to how my next day goes! I agree as a stay at home mum it’s easy to think you can take care of yourself later but if you’re not happy no one is!

    1. That totally reminds me!! I need to look into getting a bigger crockpot!! Haha Mine was fine for personal meals but I can utilize a full size pot!! Thanks girl!

  2. A couple of arts and crafts ideas or a special day arts and crafts box, on standby so if your plans get cancelled and your unexpectedly home you don’t have such fed up little ones e.g. make a, rocket/car from loo roll and a cereal box. That helps me πŸ™‚

  3. This is so true and I can really relate to this! IF mum isn’t happy, no one is! Listening to music while I cook/clean is a must for me, too! Also a comfortable outfit. I can’t be doing with tight uncomfortable clothes. Great post! I enjoyed reading this, thank you for sharing. xx

  4. Thankfully I don’t mind mornings, but they are like a military operation. I have an hour to get up, feed N, get him dressed in time and get my stuff ready for work, so I do as much as possible in the evening

    1. I used to be so much better about getting up and out of the house at a certain time. Now after having two kiddos and not having to do it very often – I really miss the discipline! Way to rock it lady!

    1. For the record – I would not consider myself a morning person in the slightest! So these things really do help me get into mom mood! Haha

  5. This is so very true! I find if I am happy Sonia everyone else. It is definately very true. This is a great post nice to see what you need to keep you going and happy . I do think a nice cup of coffee in the morning goes down well! X

  6. This is a great post. I have just been sat here thinking about some of the things i need to change to be more productive. I am a stay at home mum but I work from home on my blog so I really need to organise myself more or at least set myself up for the day with a good morning start. A coffee is definitely a must for me, and I also should take note about the dishwasher at night. When I have left it for the morning it always starts the day on a bad note. Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

  7. Lately I’ve changed my sleeping schedule so I can wake up at 7am and workout for an hour and then start work (I work from home).
    I found out that enjoying the silence before everyone is awake is quite relaxing and contributes a lot for my day πŸ™‚

  8. Are you sure you are not me in disguise? This sounds like my life apart from the coffee, I only drink tea. I am going to try setting my clothes out the night before so I don’t end up staying in pj’s/lounge wear all day!
